Two categories, two licences
The SoW Standard is open. The element register, the JSON Schema, the SoW templates, the guidance notes, and the AI review prompts are published under the Apache License, Version 2.0. That licence permits commercial use, modification, redistribution, and building products on top of the standard. If you would like to partner to customise your own version of this standard, see the partner page.
The learning materials are proprietary. Course content, lesson scripts, videos, slides, workbooks, assessments, question banks, capstone briefs, the curriculum design, and the certification materials are not covered by the Apache licence. No part of them may be copied, resold, or reused without our written permission.
Commercial Standard subscription content (pricing frameworks, commercial playbooks, and the Scope Reference Class Forecast) is also proprietary and is licensed to subscribers under the subscription terms. If you would like to partner to customise your own version of this standard, see the partner page.
What you may do
- Use the SoW Standard in any organisation, for any engagement, including commercially
- Adapt the standard and distribute your adaptation, provided you state that you changed it and keep the copyright and licence notices intact
- Build tools, integrations, and commercial products on the schema
- Train your own people internally using the standard itself
- Cite and link to the learning materials, and quote short extracts with attribution
What you may not do
- Copy, record, download, scrape, republish, or redistribute the learning materials or the Commercial Standard content, in whole or in part
- Deliver our learning materials as training, whether paid or free, to anyone outside your organisation
- Repackage, resell, sublicense, or white-label the learning materials or certification content
- Use the learning materials or the Commercial Standard content to build a competing course, curriculum, or certification
- Share account credentials, or give access to a person who has not enrolled
- Use the materials as training data for a machine learning model, or to generate derivative teaching content, without our written permission
- Present yourself as certified, verified, or accredited when you have not completed the relevant assessment
- Use our trademarks, badges, or brand assets without written permission
- Claim that a document, product, or service conforms to the SoW Standard when it does not satisfy the canonical schema
- Attempt to breach, probe, or overload the site, the Scanner, or any related service
Commercial partners and platform use
If you want to teach our learning materials, resell or bundle certification, run the standard as a service for your clients, embed the Commercial Standard content in a product you sell, or otherwise commercialise anything outside the Apache licence, you need a separate written agreement with us.
We license partners case by case. The agreement covers scope, territory, fees, quality standards, trademark use, and how learners are supported. Nothing on this site grants a partner licence, and no course purchase, subscription, or download creates one. Write to hello@statementofwork.org to start that conversation.
Ownership of the learning materials
All learning and certification materials published on this site are owned by statementofwork.org and World Commerce & Contracting, and all rights are reserved. This covers the curriculum, the lesson content, the videos and their scripts, the assessments and question banks, the graded capstone materials, the badges, and the credential names.
Access to a course gives you a personal, non-transferable right to learn from the material for your own professional development. It does not transfer ownership and it does not grant a licence to reproduce or distribute the material.
Enforcement
Where we find a breach we may suspend or close the account, withdraw access to purchased content without refund, revoke a credential and remove it from public verification, and pursue any other remedy available to us. Serious or repeated breaches are referred to our legal advisers.
If you believe someone is misusing our materials, tell us at hello@statementofwork.org.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy. The version number and date at the top change when we do, and material changes are notified to account holders by email. Continuing to use the site or the materials after a change means you accept the updated policy.
